Azathoth is the Cthulhu Mythos' "creator god", though it is debatable whether either of those words accurately describes the most powerful of Lovecraft's deities. Commonly described as "the daemon-sultan" and "a formless nuclear chaos", Azathoth is the most powerful and frightening of all beings in the Mythos universe. It allegedly spawned the entire multiverse as outcroppings of its own body, and mindlessly eats unceasingly as it is lulled to sleep by amorphous dancers, drummers and flute-players.
Azathoth is one of the most common deities in the Cthulhu Mythos, rivaling only Nyarlathotep for most appearances. It appears in The Dream-quest of Unknown Kadath, The Whisperer in Darkness, Dreams in the Witch-House, The Thing on the Doorstep, and The Haunter of the Dark, as well as many others. It also appears in the epic poem Fungi from Yuggoth. Interestingly, Azathoth is never mentioned in the story Azathoth.
