Cthulhu and R'lyeh

Cthulhu with the city of R'lyeh.

"In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."
H. P. Lovecraft[src]

R’lyeh is a sunken city located deep under the Pacific Ocean according to "The Call of Cthulhu" by H. P. Lovecraft. The city is the burial ground where Cthulhu himself lays until the end of time.

Description[]

"The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh ... was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults . . . until the end."
―H. P. Lovecraft[src]

When R’lyeh once again raised to the surface the only visible building was a single “hideous monolith-crowned citadel” where Cthulhu was buried. The spectators were awestruck by the size of the horrific city. The buildings were said to be marked with ”horrible images and disturbing hieroglyphs.”
